Welsh Music Wednesday #7: The Hearts

poster

Band name: The Hearts

From: Newport

The Hearts are a caffeine rush to the brain on a Monday morning and a shot of adrenaline straight to the veins on a Friday night. Yesterday we introduced you to the band and documented their journey so far and today we’re taking a closer look at their latest single ‘Run Free‘. Fast-paced indie rock glittered with elements of 80s style pop, ‘Run Free‘ is, again, completely different to their previous releases, ‘Lips‘ and ‘Celebrate‘, showcasing their versatility as songwriters and music-makers. However, ‘Run Free‘ still follows the same first-class formula of their other songs, striking melodies layered with synth and guitars building up to a huge fist-pumping, head-banging chorus.

There’s something about The Hearts’ music that feels pleasantly familiar even when you hear it for the first time, but it still manages to sound new and exciting in a musical age where it’s so easy to become a copy and paste of someone else. Maybe the familiarity I’m feeling is down to them being frequently compared to The Killers, Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics and other bands of similar genres, but The Hearts combine the strongest elements of these genres to create a modern, animated sound with their own unique seal. They do what you do, but better.

You don’t need to take our word for it, you can find out for yourself as they kick off their first UK headline tour this week, starting in Leeds and finishing at Radio One’s Big Weekend in Norwich later this month. Until then, here’s the video for their latest single ‘Run Free‘ in which Newport’s answer to Brandon Flowers, frontman Alex Nash, tries to make love to a mannequin. Enjoy.
